Tourism Assosciation

Villages

A host of hidden treasures are waiting to be discovered in the villages surrounding Ashford and Tenterden.

Mediaeval and 17th century buildings line the main street of Biddenden making it one of the prettiest and most unspoilt villages in the county. Smarden boasts a wealth of period houses and more than 100 listed buildings, while Pluckley is said to be Kent's most haunted village and provided the setting for much of the filming for the popular television series, The Darling Buds of May.

Wye is an ideal base from which walkers can explore the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and also visit the fine mediaeval buildings of Wye College, a former world famous centre for agricultural study. Visitors can follow Charing's village trail and discover the former Archbishop's Palace, visited by Henry's VII and VIII and the numerous historic buildings and footpaths leading to the Pilgrims Way.

The perfectly preserved 15th century village of Chilham with its castle, church and pub set around a central village square is often used as a film set, while Appledore, at the edge of the atmospheric Romney Marsh, is an ideal place for lunch followed by a leisurely stroll along the Royal Military Canal.

The cathedral city of Canterbury, Dover's famous white cliffs and castle, the cobbled streets of smuggler's Rye and attractions such as Leeds Castle and Sissinghurst Castle Gardens are all within easy reach.
